New In Karea: A Block Editor, Two-Factor Sign-In, And A Smoother Karea Connect

·5 min read

This release is about two things: a much nicer way to write in Karea, and a Karea Connect that gets out of your way. There is also a new layer of protection for your account. Here is what changed.

Two-Factor Sign-In And Sign Out Everywhere

  • Two-factor sign-in (optional). Turn it on from your Profile and Karea asks for a code from an authenticator app on your phone (Google Authenticator or any other) after your password, so a stolen password alone is not enough. You also get a set of one-time recovery codes, in case you lose the phone.
  • Sign out everywhere. Also on your Profile: one click signs you out of every browser and device at once, this one included, and connected apps have to sign in again. Your API keys keep working. Handy after using a shared computer.

A Notion-Style Editor For Notes, Descriptions And Meetings

Notes, task descriptions, the new-task window, meeting prep notes and meeting transcripts now open in a block editor: one block per line, like in Notion.

  • Type "/" for headings, bulleted, numbered and check lists, toggle lists, quotes, code blocks, tables, dividers, and images, videos, audio and files by link.
  • Style as you go. A toolbar above the text, and on any selection, gives you bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, colours, alignment, links and heading sizes. Markdown shortcuts like # or - still work as you type.
  • @ mentions work as before: the same search, the same results, and you can still create a task, a question or a meeting right from the menu.
  • Everything shows the same once saved, in the task, in notes and in meetings. If you prefer plain markdown, the MD view is still one click away.

Karea Connect, Smoother

Karea Connect runs Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode on your own machine, straight from your tasks. This release makes it much easier to live with.

  • Drop files into a session. Drag a file onto a session, in chat or terminal view, and it is sent to your machine and mentioned in your message, ready for the AI to read. Like everything in Connect, the file travels end-to-end encrypted.
  • Background commands. A long command can be sent to the background from its card in the chat, or with Ctrl+B twice, so the AI carries on while it runs. Stop now stops background work too.
  • See up to three sessions side by side. The Connect page has a new Tasks view, with a tile per task, and a Shared View that puts up to three sessions next to each other. Add sessions to it from the Tasks view or by hovering a session in the list. Each one shows its status as a coloured dot, and a session that finishes glows blue until you look at it.
  • The floating window is the same everywhere. Put a session in the floating window and it shows up there in your other tabs and on your other devices too; take it out, and it goes away everywhere.
  • Read and resume ended sessions from the floating window: its session list now has Show ended sessions.
  • Press C anywhere in Karea to open Connect: the floating window, or the list of running sessions.
  • Tag your sessions with a short label of up to three characters, shown wherever the session is listed.
  • Your Connect page layout follows you: grouping, folded groups and "active only" are remembered on every device.
  • Warned before closing a task with running sessions. Moving a task to Done, Cancelled or Backlog while a session is still running on it now asks whether to keep it running or end it.
  • /clear now empties the chat straight away, and a session's activity now brightens its task's activity map.

To get file drop, update the connector on your machines: Karea shows an Update button when a new version is available.

Tasks, Search And Sharing

  • Faster, smarter search. The quick actions panel and the command palette now share one search, which finds partial words and abbreviations and ranks the best match first.
  • Subtasks on the dashboard. Open subtasks now show on your project dashboard, under their parent when it is in the same category, or with a clear "Subtask of" label when it is not.
  • Share a task with its open questions. Sharing now starts with a short reminder that anyone with the link can see the task, then lets you choose what to include: notes, subtasks, resources and now open questions.
  • Link tasks to open questions straight from the question window.
  • The new-task window opens instantly and keeps what you typed if you close it, until you create the task.
  • A friendlier time picker: click the hour or the minutes and just type them.
  • Reminders read naturally: "in 20 min" today, "Tomorrow at 9:00" for tomorrow.
  • Notes are also in the Details tab, right under the closing requisites, and status changes in a task's history are now coloured.
  • The pricing page now shows which plan you are on.

Fixes

  • Moving a task to another project no longer fails with an error, and its new ID shows straight away.
  • Bold text around links in descriptions and notes now shows as bold, without stray asterisks.
  • Dropping a file into a resources folder opened from search now saves it in that folder.
  • Clicking "Subtask of" in the side panel no longer reloads the page.
  • Typing in a date picker while a Connect session is open no longer sends the keys to the session.
  • Many smaller fixes across Connect, notes and the quick actions panel.

As always, tell us what you think from the feedback button in Karea.
